Concepts and Competencies

The learner will:

  • Distinguish long and short vowels when reading regularly spelled one-syllable words
  • Decode two-syllable words with long vowels and words with common prefixes and suffixes
  • Read grade level high-frequency sight words and words with inconsistent but common spelling-sound correspondences
  • Read grade-appropriate irregularly spelled words (e.g. was, Wednesday, again, Earth)

Supportive Practices

The adult will:

  • Provide direct, explicit, and systematic phonics instruction
  • Provide daily opportunities to practice reading on-level text and high frequency words
  • Post high frequency words in the classroom (e.g. word wall)
  • Incorporate high frequency words into meaningful context
  • Provide ongoing progress monitoring to ensure mastery of taught skills
  • Use decodable text for practice and transfer of phonics skills to text
