The Pennsylvania Department of Education, Bureau of Special Education, is pleased to announce the following training opportunity:
Word Problems - Additive Schemas
Dates: October 6, 2025 – December 15, 2025
Location: Asynchronous Online Course through Schoology
In this course, participants will better understand pairing general attack strategies alongside schema instruction to best help students approach, understand, and solve word problems. This course covers all the additive schemas - total, difference, and change. To do this, participants will explore when word problems and problem solving best fit into math instruction by understanding the science of learning and the instructional hierarchy (IH). Participants will consider how they design learning experiences to ensure the correct instructional match for their students. They will also address five common challenges students face with specific to word problems. New knowledge acquisition, resources provided, and checks for understanding will allow participants to put practices in place after completing the course framework.
Target Audience: Elementary teachers, Mathematics teachers, Mathematics coaches, Special education teachers, Administration, Math Interventionists
