Pennsylvania Teachers Encouraged to Apply for New Symposium at Flight 93 National Memorial

3/17/2026

Teachers from across Pennsylvania are invited to apply for “Teaching With Courage: 9/11 and the Legacy of Flight 93,” a new two and a half day professional education symposium hosted this summer at Flight 93 National Memorial. This continuing education program is a collaboration between the University of Pittsburgh School of Education, Friends of Flight 93, and the National Park Service.

Applications open March 2, 2026, and Pennsylvania civic, history, and social studies teachers from elementary, middle, and high schools have until April 1 to apply. Symposium leadership anticipates selecting approximately 40 educators for this inaugural program.

“Teaching complex and emotionally charged historical events requires thoughtful preparation and care. The Teaching With Courage: 9/11 and the Legacy of Flight 93 Symposium will provide educators with the tools and confidence to help students understand the significance and lasting impact of this critical moment in U.S. history,” said Dr. Melissa Nelson, Assistant Professor of Practice in the School of Education at the University of Pittsburgh.

“Our goal is to provide an immersive experience at the memorial for teachers and to build a talented network of educators to support 9/11 education into the future,” said Donna Gibson, Executive Director of Friends of Flight 93.

The symposium will take place June 22–24 at Flight 93 National Memorial as the nation observes the 250th anniversary of the United States and the 25th year since the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001.

Participants will engage with scholarly research, site based learning, and the stewardship of historical artifacts to deepen their understanding of Flight 93 National Memorial and the forty crew and passengers who lost their lives.
